What You Should Do / Monitor Mundane Work
1. Check your agency’s shutdown plan
Each federal agency has “contingency / shutdown” plans. Find out whether your position is considered “excepted,” or whether you’re likely to be furloughed.
2. Plan financially
If you may go unpaid (temporarily), try to have reserves or make arrangements (e.g. expense reduction, emergency funds).
3. Stay informed about benefit notices
Keep an eye on notices from SSA, Medicare, SNAP, etc., especially for any changes in delivery or processing delays.
4. Maintain documentation, deadlines
If you have paperwork or deadlines involving federal agencies (school aid, benefits appeals, certifications), get them submitted quickly in case processing slows.
5. Contact your representatives
Let your U.S. House or Senate offices know how program delays or shutdowns affect you. Their offices often help constituents navigate federal agency slowdowns. 
6. Watch for changes in duration
The longer the shutdown goes on, the more severe disruptions may become (even for programs that are temporarily protected).
