FÈT GEDE OIL and Wash
Spiritual Purpose
To honor your ancestors and the spirits who keep the gates between life and death.
To release grief, fear, or stagnation that has settled in your spirit.
To receive guidance and renewal from the other side.
To celebrate the laughter, memory, and magick of those who came before you.
Fèt Gede (pronounced fet geh-day) is the Festival of the Dead in Haitian Vodou — a time to honor the ancestors and spirits of death known as the Gede (or Guédé) family.
It’s often compared to Día de los Muertos in Mexico or All Saints’ / All Souls’ Days in Catholicism, but it carries the unique rhythm, irreverence, and power of Haitian and African ancestral traditions.
When It’s Celebrated:
November 1–2 (aligned with All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days)
However, the celebrations often continue for several days in Vodou houses, spiritual communities, and private homes.
Who Are the Gede Spirits?
The Gede are the keepers of death and life, guardians of the cemetery, and masters of transformation.
They are tricksters, healers, and teachers — reminding us that death is not the end, but a crossing into new life.
Key Gede Spirits:
Baron Samedi – Lord of the Cemetery, dressed in black and purple, with a top hat, sunglasses, and a cigar. He governs death and resurrection.
Maman Brigitte – Baron's wife; protector of women and children, especially those who die young.
Gede Nibo – Patron of those who die before their time (accidents, violence, etc.), often flamboyant and colorful.
Gede Ti Malis, Gede Douby, Gede Zariyen – Each has their own humor, lessons, and ways of bringing change.
